Effective and efficient health service delivery can quickly be undermined when health professionals are promoted into leadership or management positions because of seniority or clinical expertise.

Instead, individuals, teams, and institutions need to be prepared with staff who have been nurtured as health leaders and managers equipped with critical problem-solving, management, and leadership skills to overcome daily workplace challenges.

Oftentimes, this gap comes early in a health workers' career as a result of pre-service training curricula that focus solely on clinical knowledge and not on leadership and management.

This technical brief summarize the process of integrating leadership, management, and governance practices into pre-service curricula of medical education and training institutions in Ethiopia, Rwanda, and Zambia. It also outlines achievements and learning that will be helpful for individuals or organizations that seek to replicate this approach.
