Peter Ngatia

Director of Capacity Building, AMREF

Dr. Peter Muchiri Ngatia will be the principal liaison AMREF to the LMG Team, and will help enhance LMG plans and strategies for eLearning and Knowledge Exchange (KE) and assist in interviews of selected African health sector leaders. Dr. Ngatia is the Director of Capacity Building in African Medical and Research Foundation (AMREF). He is responsible for the overall training and capacity building function in the organization in Africa, focusing on human resource development, health management information systems and leadership and management. His main areas of expertise include human resources for health (HRH) development, health systems strengthening and Research and Medical education. Since joining AMREF about 26 years ago, he has held several key positions including Acting Director General, Director of Programmes, Country Director and Chief Technical Advisor. Dr. Ngatia has spearheaded the development of programmes strategies and policies in Human Resources for Health in the continent. These programmes have been credited with scaling up and skilling up HRH in countries such as Uganda, Southern Sudan, Kenya, Rwanda, among others. He is a member of the Global Health Workforce Alliance and its African Platform, and the Chairman of the Africa Health Leadership and Management Network. Dr. Ngatia has spearheaded various consultancies on behalf of AMREF for several Ministries of Health in Africa, the World Bank, European Union, the World Health Organization, CIDA, SIDA, DFID and USAID. He has authored several publications on capacity building of health workers, the problem of brain drain in Africa, eLearning and mobile learning in poor countries, monitoring and evaluation, research and innovative curricula for health workers. Dr. Ngatia holds a BSc in Rehabilitation Medicine, MEd in Medical Education and Public Health, and a PhD in Medical Education, Planning and Development from the University of Alberta in Canada.
