This paper adopts a critical approach to current practice in organizational capacity building (OCB) for CBOs. The central question raised by the paper is: How can approaches to organizational capacity building respond more effectively to the specific culture and sociopolitical context in which community-based organizations operate? It brings together a range of issues relating to good practice for OCB in terms of: awareness of local context, planning the OCB strategy, increasing internal and relational capacity and phasing out OCB support. The conclusion examines some implications of these observations for practice, and highlights principles to guide future interventions and areas for future research.
