Malaria is the leading cause of morbidity and mortality in Burundi and accounted for more than 50% of patient visits to health care facilities and 45% of hospitalizations in 2015. The government of Burundi declared a malaria epidemic in the country after nearly 2 million cases of malaria, including almost 800 deaths, were reported since January 1, 2017 – a rise of 13% compared with the same period in 2016.

With support from the President’s Malaria Initiative, the USAID-funded Leadership, Management, and Governance National Malaria Control Program Capacity Building (LMG/NMCP) Project, partnered with the Burundi NMCP to improve coordinated national efforts in the fight against malaria.

This fact sheet details some of the LMG/NMCP Project’s key accomplishments in Burundi.
