Gender Matters in Health Leadership, Management and Governance

Gender matters. So much so that health systems with gender-equitable policies and practices can save lives. The LMG project is currently working with health leaders, managers, and governors to develop gender-aware policies, AND make sure those policies evolve into activities that will have a positive impact on everyone at all levels of the health system.

This LMG eNewsletter will show you how our USAID-funded work supports a national ministry in strengthening gender-related initiatives in Ethiopia. We also present the outcomes of a LeaderNet online seminar on “Women in Leadership,” and excerpts from the seminar participants’ vibrant dialogue on the leadership styles of men and women, the challenges that women face in aspiring to leadership positions, and gaps that still need to be addressed.  A LeaderNet participant Survey on Mentoring of Women Health Leaders gives great insights on how to set up mentoring programs and networks.

LMG’s newest publication, “An Open Mind and a Hard Back: Conversations with African Women Leaders,” provides insights on ways women lead and govern in their communities and countries, and the qualities and characteristics they have as leaders. The publication highlights interviews conducted with over a dozen women leaders working across the fields of government, health, law, and social reform in Burkina Faso, Democratic Republic of Congo, Liberia, Mauritius, Nigeria, Rwanda, Senegal, Seychelles, Sierra Leone, Swaziland, Uganda, and Zambia.

Finally, try our Gender in Governance Tool—a simple survey that governance decision-makers should read over prior to making a substantive decision. After the decision has been made, you can then use the tool to test how gender-responsive you were in your decision making process.
